The New Year is traditionally seen as a chance for a fresh start, so it’s fitting that our two bestselling books of last week are Scott Pape’s popular DIY financial guide, The Barefoot Investor, and Mark Manson’s The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck – the self-help book for people who hate self-help books.

We’re delighted to see plenty of readers snapping up copies of Jane Harper’s gripping literary thrillers, The Dry and Force of Nature. Some of our other favourite fiction reads from last year to also appear on this list include… Jennifer Egan’s absorbing historical novel, Manhattan Beach; Kamila Shamsie’s masterful reimagining of Sophocles’ Antigone, Home Fire; and George Saunders’s utterly original ghost story, Lincoln in the Bardo.
