Our predictions for Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Fans farewelled Harry Potter as he waved goodbye to his children at the start of the school year, nineteen years after the battle of Hogwarts. But his story didn’t end there…

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the official rehearsal script for the West End stage play and will continue on from where the novels finished. Here are our (admittedly, rather unlikely) predictions of what will happen in the new story.

“Harry’s wife Ginny has died (sorry!) and he’s raising their three children solo, while also working full-time at the Ministry of Magic. Harry gives his son Albus – the most emotionally delicate of his three children – the invisibility cloak as a gift to take back to Hogwarts. One day when Albus is walking in the forest he discovers the Resurrection stone. Realising he has two of the three Deathly Hallows, he decides to reclaim the Elder Wand from Dumbledore’s tomb and attempt to bring his mother back to life.‘ – Lian Hingee, Digital Marketing Manager

"After Dudley Dursley dies of a heart attack, Harry finds himself saddled with his cousin’s two kids. One of them, Deidre, shows a lot of magical promise and secures herself a place at Hogwarts. The other, Derek, is another matter. He’s a muggle through and through, infuriatingly dim-witted, and there’s just something about him that rubs Harry up the wrong way. Everybody else insists that Derek is perfectly fine, but Harry can’t help feeling that the child is cursed in some way. As his temper frays, Harry finds himself taking drastic measures, like locking Derek under the stairs. Think of it as Harry Potter meets Doris Lessing’s The Fifth Child. Fun for the whole family!” – Holly Harper, Children’s Bookseller at Readings Carlton

“Harry’s scar is aching again, and despite Ginny’s pleadings with him to stay safe at home, he knows that his battle is not yet over. He contacts Ron and Hermione (not happily married by-the-by) and together they must find a way forward to ensure peace. They’re all parents now and like Harry’s own parents, they would even die for their children if needed. Oh Harry, Ron and Hermione – one of you won’t make it through this story… Tick tock…” – Chris Gordon, Event Manager

“Harry Potter is a government employee, beaten down by the wheels of wizarding bureaucracy. As an Auror, he spends his days rounding up Voldemort’s last few followers and imitators, although he’s bitter about what he feels are diminishing returns since he claimed his biggest scalp in high school. His wife Ginny has left him and this has soured the relationship with his brother-in-law Ron, as well as his three children. The 'curse’ of the title is the curse of the Potter name, with Harry and his kids feeling the strain between his legendary legacy and their more mundane reality. A comedy.” – Alan Vaarwerk, Editorial Assistant for Readings Monthly

“Harry’s son, Albus, is best friends with Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius, as well as Ron and Hermione’s daughter, Rose. All three belong to Slytherin, a fact that Hermione is fine with but Ron and Harry struggle to accept, and consequently Ron and Harry have become alienated from their children. When the trio of teens get in trouble, they turn to Hermione for help, and she has to band together with Draco Malfoy to rescue their children. During the rescue, Draco and Hermione become friends, and an attraction forms. As their secret friendship grows, Hermione is torn between her loyal-but-inattentive husband Ron and the troubled-emotionally-complex Draco. Meanwhile, Ginny is cheating on Harry with Neville, who allows her to explore the darker side of her magical sexual fantasies in ways that Harry can’t.” – Nina Kenwood, Marketing Manager

“I don’t know if I have predictions so much as recommendations for how I think this story should transpire… First, I hope there’s a new evil wizard in town, as opposed to Voldemort returning in some way. I also hope that this new wizard has some connection to Dumbledore’s incredible adventures pre-Harry. (As an aside, I would 100% read a biography about Dumbledore’s life.) I’m very interested in how the sibling rivalry and friendships play out between all the children; I suspect Scorpius may end up becoming an unlikely ally. I also hope we see the dynamics between Harry, Ron and Hermione – and their children – portrayed in interesting and believable ways. The lack of parents in so many classic children’s narratives allows for certain autonomy that might not exist so readily here.” – Bronte Coates, Digital Content Coordinator

“It’s rough being a Hufflepuff. To think Albus was afraid he might be a Slytherin. I mean, the last great Hufflepuff was Cedric Diggory, and look what happened to him. (One word… Twilight.) Albus’ brothers have all but disowned him, and everyone seems to think he’s suddenly become a complete idiot. Even his Aunt Hermione has taken to giving him a little pat on the shoulder and asking if he “wouldn’t like a bit of help with that homework?”! Then there’s the rumours about one of the Potter kids being cursed to release You Know Who’s soul. With his only help from his fellow Hufflepuff Pandora Parkinson, Albus must find out if the rumours are true before one of his brothers, or worse, him, becomes a vessel for the most evil wizard in history.” – Cat Matteson, Art Designer
