We were so excited last week to get our hands on La Belle Sauvage – Philip Pullman’s long-awaited return to the world of his award-winning His Dark Materials trilogy. Set 10 years before the original books, this is a gripping fantasy adventure that our reviewer describes as ‘darkly thrilling, deliciously tense and dangerously addictive’ – and we’re not the slightest bit surprised to see that it’s our bestselling book of last week. This is the kind of richly-imagined and thought-provoking fantasy that has equal appeal for teenage and adult readers.

This past month has seen two other major releases for young readers, both of which appear at the top of this list. Turtles All the Way Down is the emotionally-rich new book from YA superstar, John Green, and Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is the first book in a new children’s series that caused a major stir at Frankfurt Book Fair (for ages 9+).

Other bestselling children’s books of last week include two titles from the hilarious Aaron Blabey: The Bad Guys Episode 6: Alien vs Bad Guys is an illustrated chapter book for ages 6+, and Pig the Star) is a picture book about everyone’s favourite (and rudest!) pug for ages 3+.

Also in picture books, we’re pleased to see two of our recent favourites listed here: Hello, Melbourne! and The Rabbit-Hole Golf Course. We recently featured both these local books in our list of suggested Australian picture books for gifting friends and family abroad. You can find our full list of recommendations here.
