Two of this year’s most anticipated books were released last week – both of which appear at the top of our list of bestselling books for children and teens.

Turtles All the Way Down is the new book from YA superstar, John Green. Opening with a fugitive billionaire, this is a story about lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, Star Wars fan fiction, and tuatara. At the novel’s heart is Aza Holmes – a young woman navigating daily existence within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is the first book in a charmingly odd, breathtakingly adventurous and entirely magical new children’s series for ages 9 and up. Snapped up by publishers in 20 countries and on its way to being a feature film, this is the debut novel from Australian author Jessica Townsend – and you can read why we’re comparing it to Harry Potter here.

Other books that are proving popular with young readers include two new books continuing hilarious and beloved Australian series (The Bad Guys Episode 6: Alien vs Bad Guys and The 91-Storey Treehouse), the bestselling feminist story anthology from Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo (Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls), a brand-new heart-racing adventure from Rick Riordan (Magnus Chase and the Ship of the Dead), a gorgeous new picture book all about Melbourne (Hello, Melbourne!), and Zana Fraillon’s award-winning YA novel about life in an Australian detention centre (The Bone Sparrow).
