Heading up our children’s and YA bestsellers of last week is Susan White’s Take the Shot, about a 14-year-old boy with a passion for basketball who’s diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, Marfan syndrome. This life-affirming and funny debut is a great read for younger teens, particularly those who are sports mad. Another YA blockbuster in the top 10 is Nina Kenwood’s It Sounded Better in My Head. Netflix has nothing on the whip-smart dialogue and heart-tugging romance of this sparkling wonder, which you’ll binge read easily in a couple of sittings. (Having said that, it would also make a great movie… just saying, streaming services!)
Irreverence and chaos reign supreme with the junior fiction bestsellers, with The 117-Storey Treehouse , the latest Dog Man title For Whom the Ball Rolls and The World’s Worst Teachers all making a showing in the top 10. Andy Griffiths was kind enough to come sign some copies of The 117-Storey Treehouse for us last week, so if you were too far out to make the book launch or haven’t been able to get a copy signed so far, this is the perfect opportunity to grab one!
And finally, it’s wonderful to see more and more engaging local nonfiction books for children. Young Dark Emu and Welcome to Your Period are both great examples of this trend (that’s hopefully here to stay).
