Join our Doncaster book club

You’re invited to join our first-ever Doncaster book club! Enjoy lively discussions, wine and nibbles, and a 20% discount on any full-priced fiction.

When and where do the meetings take place?

The Readings Doncaster Book Club will meet in the Readings bookshop on the Ground Floor of Westfield Doncaster at 619 Doncaster Rd, Victoria. Meetings take place on the last Thursday of every month at 7pm. Our first bookclub sessions will commence in February 2018.

How does the book club work?

We’ll send you an email before each meeting with handy discussion points to guide your conversation on the night, along with links to relevant reviews or interviews. Reading the discussion points is entirely optional: it’s just in case you’d like help kickstarting your thoughts. Our book clubs can be as serious or as social as it suits, depending on how much you like the book, or your mood on the night. And our convenors, Readings Doncaster staff members Bel and Jo, will be there to gently guide the conversation, help prompt your thoughts, and ask opinions from the group. We’d love to see you there!

What will the book club be reading in 2018?

The book club will be reading fiction and memoir, hand-picked by Readings Doncaster staff for our customers.

We’ve already chosen our first three books, to give you a taste of the club. In February, we’ll read Pulitzer prize-winner Jennifer Egan’s historical bestseller Manhattan Beach, a Readings staff favourite that begins in Depression-era Brooklyn. In March, we’ll read The Good Girl of Chinatown, trained dancer Jenevieve Chang’s beautifully told tale of working as an old-fashioned showgirl in Shanghai. And in April, we’ll read the brand-new novel from Ceridwen Dovey, winner of the inaugural Readings Prize (for Only the Animals) – the psychologically gripping In the Garden of Fugitives, an unputdownable novel of obsession, guilt, and the power of the past to possess the present.

How much does it cost?

The Readings Doncaster Book Club costs $65 for five sessions from February to June 2018 inclusive. The cost includes wine and snacks at each book club session. You may pay by cash over the counter or by credit card or EFT. After receiving payment, we will provide you with a receipt and your Book Club Membership Card. You will also receive 20% off all full-priced fiction, biography and memoir from Readings Doncaster on presentation of your Book Club Membership Card.
