Five reasons we love Escape to the Moon Islands by Mardi McConnochie

Escape to the Moon Islands by Mardi McConnochie is one of the six books shortlisted for this year’s Readings Children’s Book Prize. Here are five reasons why we think it’s brilliant.

1. The story touches on some big issues, but it’s still a real page-turner.

Like the best of dystopian fiction, this book’s world draws comparisons with the prevalent issues of today, such as climate change and over-zealous government control. Mardi McConnochie has imaginatively crafted a world transformed by a catastrophic flood. Entire communities have been wiped out by the deluge and a sinister force has seized control of the oceans and land. The devastation wrought by the flood has left slums in its wake and the divide between the haves and have-nots is marked.

Despite this dark territory, Escape to the Moon Islands is a fast-paced, action-packed book that always puts the story first.

2. This novel has the feel of a classic adventure tale.

Escape to Moon Islands may be set in the near future, but the story itself is vintage adventure. Think Robinson Crusoe meets The Famous Five – for readers 9 and up. When Will and Annalie’s father disappears, they set off on his sailing boat, the Sunfish, to find him. Soon joined by two other children, the motley crew must battle storms, pirates and more as they are pursued by the all-powerful Admiralty.

3. The children in the story are smart, brave and self-sufficient.

It’s always terrific to read a story where children have the skills to solve their own problems. Will, Annalie, Essie and Pod all have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it’s delightful to see them work out how to come together as a team. The sibling relationship of Will and Annalie is skilfully wrought – their mingled feelings of rivalry, respect and love is evident. Similarly, the relationships between the other children are engaging and believable.

4. There’s a talking parrot.

And not just any ordinary talking parrot either. Graham is a genetically engineered bird with advanced communication skill and a fervent enthusiasm for biscuits. He’s a funny, opinionated, affectionate, grumpy bird who will undoubtedly remind kids of their own pets. If only they could talk too!

5. This book is the first in a brand-new series.

Series are a brilliant way to keep your young reader reading, and book two of the Quest of the Sunfish series has already been released. In The Castle in the Sea, the kids are still on the hunt for Spinner when they get separated… Young fans can expect even more high-stakes adventure as McConnochie continues to colour in the world of her books.
