Eight emerging poets to see at EWF 2017

Here at Readings, we’re getting very excited for Emerging Writers’ Festival, which opens on Wednesday 14 June. Here are eight emerging poets featured on this year’s program that are sure to impress.


Alison Whittaker

Alison Whittaker is a Gomeroi poet and law scholar living on Wangal lands. She is the author of the award-winning poetry collection Lemons in the Chicken Wire.

Jesse Oliver

Jesse Oliver is an up and coming trans slam poet from Perth. He has previously appeared as a NYWF artist as well as taking guest spots and competitions in his local Perth scene.

Omar Sakr

Omar Sakr is an Arab Australian poet. He is the Poetry Editor of the Lifted Brow. His poetry has been translated into Spanish and Arabic as well as anthologised in The Best Australian Poems 2016 and Contemporary Australian Poetry. His debut collection is These Wild Houses.

Saaro Umar

Saaro Umar is a Oromo-Australian poet. Her work has featured in Woroni, Australian Poetry, Demos and Voiceworks.

Bella Li

Bella Li is a writer, editor and PhD candidate. Her work has been published in journals and anthologies such as Meanjin, Cordite, The Kenyon Review and Best Australian Poems. Her first full-length collection is Argosy – a book of poetry, photography and collage.

Robbie Batzke

Robbie Batzke is a poet and proud Miriam Torres Strait Islander man, originally from Cairns but now based in Melbourne. He is the founding director of Soul4GIVE, a not-for-profit Indigenous advocacy for the advancement of Indigenous wellbeing.

Hera Lindsay Bird

Hera Lindsay Bird is a poet and bookseller from Wellington. Her self-titled and semi-autobiographical book of poetry Hera Lindsay Bird has earned her a cult status. Her work has been published by The Toast, The Hairpin and has been included in Best New Zealand Poems.

Sukhjit Khalsa

Sukhjit is a first generation Australian Sikh spoken word artist, workshop facilitator, actor, producer and activist. Within a short period, Sukhjit has gone from being a participant in the Australian Poetry Slam Competition in 2014 to gracing the stage of Australia’s Got Talent in 2016, and most recently a speaker at the TedxUWA.
