Eight Australian albums to check out in April

We recommend eight Australian albums to plug in your ears this month.

We’re very pleased to share that our St Kilda shop will be hosting FREE bookshop gigs with two of the artists listed here. Come along to hear Charm of Finches on Wednesday 5 April and Rough River on Thursday 13 April.

Staring at the Starry Ceiling by Charm of Finches

Staring at the Starry Ceiling is the debut album of indie folk band, Charm of Finches, which is formed by Melbourne sisters Mabel and Ivy Windred-Worne. These talented young musicians emerge from an eclectic musical environment of classical strings and Celtic folk, and have been likened to artists as diverse as Danish chamber songstress Agnes Obel, First Aid Kit and Gillian Welch.

The Leaving by Rough River

The Leaving is local musician Kate Skinner’s second album under the moniker of Rough River. Our St Kilda shop manger Amy Vuleta says: ‘This is one of my favourite albums of the year so far.’ The album was recorded over a few months during 2016 at Electric Dreams Studio in South Melbourne, and Kate arranged all her own songs as well as playing guitar, violin and mandolin.

Half Mile Harvest by the Tesky Brothers

The Teskey brothers are a soul/blues band from the sunny banks of the Yarra River. The band consists of brothers Sam Teskey (lead guitar) and Josh Teskey (vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica), as well as Brendon Love (bass guitar) and Liam Gough (Drums). Their latest album, Half Mile Harvest, was recorded and mixed using purely analogue techniques by Sam.

After a Time by Holly Throsby

After a Time is the new album from Sydney songwriter, musician and novelist Holly Throsby, and it is a delight. Throsby describes the album as a collection of songs from the past five years of her life. She adds that some were written at the same time as she was writing her first novel, Goodwood, and that the two mediums have shared imagery.

Glassellland by Jordie Lane and the Sleepers

Imagine Rufus Wainwright is drinking tequila with Neil Young. In walks Paul McCartney with Neil Finn, together discussing the demise of human connection. If you can picture this, you’re drawing closer to the mindset and fanciful world of Jordie Lane & The Sleepers new album, Glassellland.

Middle Kids by Middle Kids (EP)

Three-piece Middle Kids have made quite an impression for a band who released their first single in 2016 without having ever played a single show. And given their brief history, their first EP is remarkably self-assured. The sound is powerful alt-pop-rock with sweeping melodies and catchy hooks – the songs all delivered by the immense, belting vocals of frontwoman Hannah Joy.

Wide Asleep by Sophie Hutchings

Wide Asleep is Sophie Hutchings’s most searching work, based on ideas on consciousness between sleep and wakefulness. Her piano lines extend with both electricity and elegance, winding through strings, textured ambience and choral voices through beauty and vitality. To create this album, Hutchings collaborated with Tim Whitten, best known for his nuanced and dynamic work with The Necks.

Vinyl is forthcoming

Sleepless Girls by Harry Howard and the NDE

Sleepless Girls is Harry Howard and the NDE’s third LP and it continues the journey that began with the infectious naivety of Near Death Experience in 2012. The band includes Harry Howard (vocals, guitar), Edwina Preston (keyboards, vocals), Dave Graney (bass) and Clare Moore (drums, backing vocals).

Vinyl is forthcoming

Don’t forget, we’re offering 20% of all vinyl throughout the month. The sale runs from 1 to 30 April 2017 at all Readings shops (except Readings Kids and Readings Malvern). The offer only applies to vinyl currently in stock, and is not available online. The offer excludes all Record Store Day releases.
