Congratulations to the winners of the Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) 2014

The winners of the 2014 Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) were announced in Sydney on Friday 23 May.

Readings is the (joint) winner of the Independent Book Retailer of the Year Award, along with Pages & Pages in Sydney.

It was a particularly successful night for Text Publishing, with Graeme Simsion’s The Rosie Project taking out both general fiction book of the year and overall book of the year, and the publisher itself being recognised as small publisher of the year.

Pan Macmillan also had a good night, with winners in the literary, illustrated, biography and younger children book categories.

General fiction book of the year and overall book of the year:
The Rosie Project (Graeme Simsion, Text)

Literary fiction book of the year:
Burial Rites (Hannah Kent, Picador)

General non-fiction book of the year:
The Stalking of Julia Gillard (Kerry-Anne Walsh, A&U)

Illustrated book of the year:
I Quit Sugar (Sarah Wilson, Macmillan)

Biography of the year:
The Crossroad (Mark Donaldson, Macmillan)

Book of the year for younger children (age range 0 to 8 years):
The 39-Storey Treehouse (Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton, Pan)

Book of the year for older children (age range 8 to 14 years):
WeirDo (Anh Do, Scholastic Press)

International book of the year:
The Luminaries (Eleanor Catton, Granta).

In the industry awards, the winners are…

Publisher of the Year:
Penguin Australia

Small Publisher of the Year:
Text Publishing

Independent book retailer of the year (joint):
Readings and Pages & Pages

Online book retailer of the year:
Booktopia

National book retailer of the year:
Dymocks

Innovation Award:
Pages & Pages (for its ‘Kindle Amnesty’ project).

As previously reported by Books+Publishing, there were several changes to this year’s awards, with some categories being awarded for the first time, and others being discontinued.
