A window display of Sai-Wai Foo's sculptures

Together with Craft, we’re delighted to present Sai-Wai Foo’s A Life Between The Pages!

During August, the windows of Readings at the State Library Victoria will play host to literary themed paper sculptures by Sai-Wai Foo.

Viewers will be transported into the world of well-loved literary classics via small scale sculptures using preloved copies of these manuscripts that have been gleaned from op-shops and flea markets. These tomes have transformed through pleating and manipulation of paper, the addition of the artisanal to create visual representations of these tales. That capture the magic and pleasure of the worlds that can be explored in the pages and the many lives that are lead.

This series of works explore the parallels between the joys of reading and crafting, solitary pursues that allow the growth of ideas, a meditative quality and an escape from the mundane.

The artist, Sai-Wai Foo, works primarily with paper. Her background in fashion design influences and informs her practice which explores the use and repurposing of discarded unwanted items, subverting their original purpose to create a new object.

We adore her intricate and stunning creations, and so make sure you come check them out for yourself. The exhibition will end on Thursday 31 August.

A Life Between The Pages is part of Craft Cubed Festival– Craft’s annual celebration of the handmade. Our gorgeous window display is just one of several featured in the Festival’s Window Walk Project which creates unique site-specific installations across Melbourne. Find out more here.
