Siren’s Storm by Lisa Papademetriou

I didn’t have high expectations for Siren’s Storm, but it surprised me. I’ve always loved the idea of mermaids, (even the evil ones) but Lisa Papademetriou puts a whole new spin on them. Called Seekriegers, these fearful adaptations of sirens are actually spin off characters from the Odyssey (well, not spin offs exactly – they were part of the actual Odyssey). Of course, that’s not all this story is about.

The story revolves around Will, Gretchen and the mysterious Asia. The novel is told in third person, but through the perspective of either Will or Gretchen. The town where the story takes place is a small town functioning because of the rich tourists or ‘summer people,’ who come and go every year. Will and Gretchen have been friends for ages, but their friendship changed since Will’s brother died the year before. And then there’s Asia. Beautiful, mysterious Asia, who trouble seems to follow, and who has more secrets than she lets on.

Although slightly slow to start with, once it gets going the story gains a momentum that leaves you breathless up until the final page! Tragedy, mystery, unrequited love, troubled and wonderfully scarred characters, this book has it all! 7/10!
