Blood Song: The First Book Of Lharmell by Rhiannon Hart

I’m always excited to see new fantasy offerings from Australian young adult authors – they have a style of storytelling which is so compelling and completely unlike anything else out there. Blood Song by debut author Rhiannon Hart definitely fits this description, and the first book of the Lharmell series is an engrossing read for lovers of both fantasy and paranormal.

Bitter winters are destroying Amentia, and the future of its people relies on eldest princess Lilith marrying a rich northern prince. Her younger sister Zeraphina, however, has no such desires for herself – and while the rest of the castle catches wedding fever, she would rather hone her archery skills. Zeraphina has always felt a little different: after all, it’s not normal for a princess to crave blood, is it? When Zeraphina first meets Rodden, advisor to the northern prince, she is less than impressed by his arrogance. But when Rodden seems to know more about her unusual hunger than anyone else, Zeraphina is intrigued. Her initial dislike turns to more than just curiosity as she pursues both Rodden and the origins of her blood hunger. As Zeraphina digs deeper for the truth, she risks putting herself and those she loves in terrible danger.

Hart’s vibrant characters are an absolute delight to read, especially feisty Zeraphina who is certainly not a shy, retiring heroine. I raced through this wonderful book, and the end came all too soon. Fans of Kristin Cashore and Tamora Pierce will absolutely devour Blood Song, and, like myself, will be eagerly awaiting the sequel!
