Shirley Hazzard was born in Sydney in 1931. She was an Australian-American novelist, short story writer, and essayist. She lived in Hong Kong, New Zealand and New York where she worked for the United Nations. She is a past recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, an American Academy Award, the O. Henry Short Story Award, National Book Award for Fiction, the Miles Franklin Award and the William Dean Howells Medal. Hazzard died in December 2016.
