Armand Gamache, on leave after a tragic police operation, is called on when the body of Auguste Renaud is found. Renaud was an eccentric amateur archeologist obsessed with Samuel Champlain, a national hero of Quebec. Gamache promised himself rest, but he is helplessly drawn to the case. What starts as temporary consulting becomes a thrilling investigation.
