Monsieur Albert Rides to Glory

Peter Smith, Bob Graham

There’s a hush in the crowd as the mayor lifts his gun, then an ear-splitting Bang! and the race has begun, with a flashing of goggles and pale cyclists' knees, and a murmuring sound like the bumble of bees. Monsieur Albert enters the Grand Cycle Race, but he’s up against Francois, the champion of France. Can he possibly win? Witty text by Pete Smith and gentle, funny illustrations by Bob Graham make this story a classic, ideal for reading aloud to young and old.

Review

Bob Graham has written and illustrated dozens of classic picture books and in Monsieur Albert Rides to Glory he’s collaborated with debut author (and his brother-in-law) Peter Smith in what might be described as Jacques Tati meets the Tour de France.

This delightful tale is told in playful, witty verse and follows Monsieur Albert, a sprightly septuagenarian who impulsively decides to compete in a cycling race from Paris to Nice.

It’s a quintessentially French adventure that is brought vividly to life through Bob Graham’s whimsical and nostalgic illustrations. Encourage older children to read it aloud so the whole family can enjoy Monsieur Albert’s exploits. Recommended for ages 4 and up.
