Our Shops

Readings is an independent retailer of books, music and film, with seven shops operating in Melbourne. Our flagship Readings Carlton shop was established in 1969 and has since been joined by stores in Doncaster, Hawthorn, Malvern and St Kilda, as well as a boutique shop at the State Library Victoria and a speciality children’s and young adult shop also in Carlton.

Each of our shops has their own individual character and strong ties to the local community. We carefully select our range to reflect the tastes of our local customers. We collectively employ over 120 staff and have approximately 150,000 books currently in stock across all seven of our shops.

Our original shop in Lygon Street, Carlton was founded by Ross Reading, his partner Dot and Peter Reid. The store was partly funded out of Dot’s teaching wage and after a particularly busy day, the shelves were known to have occasionally been restocked from Ross and Dot’s own private bookshelves at home.

Readings Carlton has long been an iconic gathering place for writers, publishers, artists and intellectuals, including cartoonist Michael Leunig, writers Helen Garner, Monica Dux, Jeff Sparrow and Catherine Deveny as well as a veritable ‘who’s who’ of local novelists. It is well-known for being a hub of vibrant community events and author signings.
