British biographer and philosopher Prof Ray Monk delivers the 2014 Seymour Biography Lecture - ‘How can I be a Logician Before I’m a Human Being? The Role of Biography in the Understanding of Intellectuals’.
Drawing from his biographies Ludwig Wittgenstein: The Duty of Genius (1990); Bertrand Russell 1921-70: The Ghost of Madness (2000) and Inside The Centre: The Life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2013), Ray Monk will discuss the legitimate role and limitations of biography in understanding philosophers and scientists.
Ray Monk is a British biographer and is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Southampton, where he has taught since 1992. The event is hosted by Peter Rose, Editor, Australian Book Review. The Seymour Biography Lecture commenced in 2005. The lecture has been generously endowed by Dr John Seymour and Mrs Heather Seymour, AO and since 2010 has been presented by the National Library of Australia.
