Inspired by the volunteerism of so many young Americas after 9/11, Ian Klaus, a 26-year-old Rhodes Scholar, found himself, in the spring of 2005, in Arbil—the largestcity in Iraqi Kurdistan. There, in the thick of war, Klaus spent a semester teaching U.S.history and English at Salahaddin University.
