Benjamin Hegarty in conversation

Carlton, Woiwurrung Country, 309 Lygon St, Carlton, Victoria, 3053

We are delighted to be hosting a discussion on Hegarty's book, The Made Up State: technology, trans femininity and Citizenship in Indonesia.

Trans visibility has become a major political force globally but has very different histories and expression in Indonesia. Here, Benjamin Hegarty, anthropologist, contends that warias, who compose one of Indonesia's trans feminine populations, have cultivated a distinctive way of captivating the affective, material, and spatial experiences of belonging to a modern public sphere. He will be in discussion with Dennis Altman, Vice Chancellor's Fellow LaTrobe and cultural Studies Researcher Annisa Beta.

This event is presented in cooperation with La Trobe Asia.

Free, but bookings are essential.

Please book here.
