The State of Being Equal: Children at war

Readings Carlton, Woiwurrung Country, 309 Lygon St, Carlton, Victoria, 3053

The State of Being Equal is a forum intended to make sure we trump Trump politics by exploring how society can be more equitable and just, rather than divisive and bellicose. Each event in the series will examine a new title that is relevant to global and sexual politics.

For seven years Rusty Young lived and worked in Colombia, interviewing special forces soldiers, snipers, undercover intelligence agents and members of terrorist organisations. He was shocked and touched by the stories of child soldiers he encountered. In Colombiano, he tells the story of a 15-year-old boy who becomes a solider after the execution of his father.

Young will discuss the experiences that inform his novel with Jeff Sparrow.
