Mahler Symphony 6

Ashkenazy Sydney Symphony

Catalogue # SSO200103

Sometimes referred to as the ‘Tragic’, Mahler’s Symphony No.6 is an impassioned portrait of the man and his musical vision. Composed between 1903 and 1904, the symphony begins with a sinister march – its pounding steps set the stage for an intensely moving creation.

In the finale, Mahler wrote three great hammerblows to symbolise the blows of destiny – then deleted one in morbid fear that the symphony would turn out to be prophetic. This is music by a composer obsessed with fate, and it spills over with passion and fierce emotions – every feeling coming directly from the heart.

“From its explosive opening, this bold, dramatic performance demanded attention, with furiously fast speeds, strong dynamic contrasts and incisive attack.” The Australian.
