Blood Thinner

Lane Jordie

Melbourne’s Jordie Lane returns from an extended stint in the\nU.S. to release his second album, Blood Thinner. To celebrate its\nimpending release on Friday, July 15th (Vitamin Records), Jordie is\nthrilled to announce a national tour with more than 20 dates across\nour great big land in July and August.

\n

After spending much of the last year baking in the Californian\ndesert, Jordie Lane’s second LP takes a sharp and unique turn away\nfrom his critically acclaimed studio debut, Sleeping Patterns.\nCompletely stripped back to the bare bones of recording techniques,\nthe tracks on Blood Thinner were captured between a remote desert\nmotel room, a basement and, finally, a bleeding hot garage in Eagle\nRock, LA.

\n

Responsible for almost every sound on the recording, Jordie\ncreates some truly unique sounds using everything from kitchen\nutensils, wine glasses, boxes and banjo skins, and even a\nfan-powered harmonium found on the side of the highway for $10.

\n

Co-produced and mixed by multi Grammy Award winner Tom Biller,\n(Beck, Kanye West, Karen O), and mastered by Grammy award winner\nReuben Cohen at Lurssen Mastering, Hollywood, Blood Thinner is a\nrecord that travels across landscapes with gospel choirs,\nnear-techno beats, campfire folk songs, bluegrass and West-coast\ncountry. It’s the journey of a lonesome traveller dealing with such\nheavy themes as anxiety, betrayal, guilt and sinning. Drifting\nbetween the lines of love and money, and always staying true to\nJordie’s storytelling prowess.

Review

After an extended and clearly productive US jaunt, local favourite Jordie Lane returns to our shores for the release of his second long-player Blood Thinner. After wowing listeners and proving himself a serious home-grown talent with 2009’s Sleeping Patterns, Lane has opted for a decidedly more stripped-back sound, with the entire album home recorded to a small four-track in motel rooms, basements and garages, while baking in the heat of the Californian desert.

Embracing the folk, country and gospel staples of the Americana sound which Lane has so clearly been immersed in, it’s a tactic which works to great effect, creating stark atmosphere and space, and allowing Lane’s considerable gifts as a storyteller to really come to the fore. Lane is one to watch.
