Sleeping Patterns

Lane Jordie

Co-produced by Jeff Lang and Tim Hall, Sleeping Patterns had\nbeen brewing in the subconscious of Jordie’s mind for nearly four\nyears, and eventually came to fruition in the winter of 2008.\nRecorded in little more than five days, in the open warehouse space\ncalled Adelphia in Melbourne the album is storytelling at its\nrawest, gutsiest, and most fragile.

\n

Featuring guest performances by prominent roots artists Ashley\nDavies, Jeff Lang, Laura Jean, Liz Stringer, Garrett Costogan and\nStevie Hesketh, Sleeping Patterns moves between finger pickin’\nballads, western tunes, rockin’ blues and even the odd sea\nshanty.

\n

With their trusty engineer Mick Wordley behind the console, Jeff\nand Tim’s approach as producers was to build a sonic landscape that\nhung around each song’s theme and in particular Jordie’s words\nalways at the core. Jeff’s subtle guitar arrangements weave in and\nout like a friendly ghost. Particular standouts being the\nunderstated magic of his chime like harmonics on ‘Clearer You’ll\nSee’ and 70’s synth-like string section on ‘Walking That Way’,\ncreated with feedback slide guitar finding frequencies dependent on\nhis body movement in the room. Not to mention his trademark reverse\ntape guitar solos that rip through the song.

\n

Jordie writes and delivers the songs with such beautiful imagery\nand wisdom, it’s hard to believe that most of the tracks on\nSleeping Patterns were written before he had even turned 21. This\nis most evident in the travel diary track ‘War Rages On’. Equipped\nwith mallet drums, and a quirky juxtaposed brass arrangement,\nJordie sings: “They ask did I ride a kangaroo to school? I said who\ntold you that you silly boys? They said it was one of them Yankee\nfools”. It goes on to encounters with ‘ladyboys’ and watching “dogs\nfornicating in the main street of town, like street clowns putting\non a show for the crowd that surrounds”.

\n

Then there’s the industrial working man blues of ‘Dig Straight\nThrough’, featuring Ashley Davies on drums and Jeff Lang on bowed\nelectric guitar, which tells of a man who tries to escape his woes\nby digging to the other side of the world. And rockers ‘Fell Into\nMe’ and ‘John W Thistle’ with real live first take energy with\nSteve Hesketh (ex Jet) ripping through on Wurli and Hammond. But\nthe album displays many soft touches also with ballads ‘The Day I\nLeave This Town’, ‘Clearer You’ll See’, but most notably the\nbeautiful sentiment of the stripped bare ‘I Could Die Looking At\nYou’.

\n

Jordie has previously released two EPs Ill Communication (2005)\nand Lovers Ride (2006), and over the past few years he has become a\nmuch talked about up-and-comer by the press and punters alike. Much\nof this would be attributed to his tireless dedication to playing\nlive shows and festivals, but also more recently his collaboration\nwith Canadian songwriter Tracy McNeil under the guise Fireside\nBellows, who are still receiving stunning accolades for the 2008\nrelease

Review

Not many artists can release two excellent albums in under a year. Even less can call them both debuts. Confused? Well Jordie Lane happens to be one half of The Fireside Bellows, who released their excellent album No Time To Die late last year. Now, barely eight months later comes his even better solo debut, Sleeping Patterns.

Aided by some of Melbourne’s best musicians and co-produced by Jeff Lang and Tim Hall, he has mixed folk and country and delivered a fine acoustic album. His love of Dylan, Van Zandt and Hank Williams are fairly obvious, but he is certainly not a pale imitator. Once again, the little indie label Vitamin has released one hell of an Australian independent album.
