Silvestrov Symphonies Nos 4-5
Lahti Symphony Orchestra Saraste Jukka Pekka
Led by Jukka-Pekka Saraste, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra\nperforms two symphonies by the Ukrainian composer Valentin\nSilvestrov. Having as a student absorbed the music of Webern,\nScriabin and the new Polish school, in the 1970s Silvestrov moved\naway from avant-garde techniques and became increasingly involved\nwith the idiom of 19th-century song. To date, Silvestrov has\ncomposed seven symphonies. Considered by some to be his\nmasterpiece, Symphony No. 5 has been described as an epilogue\ninspired by the music of late Romantic composers such as Gustav\nMahler.
