Death

Grand Salvo

Spunk Records in association with the Preservation label presents the fourth album from Melbourne’s Grand Salvo,Death. In many ways, Death is the most fully realised fruit from the much lauded imagination of the man behind Grand Salvo, Paddy Mann. While previous works revealed the storyteller in Mann, Death is a complete fable of rich proportions. The album was conceived before the release of 2005’s The Temporal Wheel on Preservation and slowly borne out over several years. As a result the songs are first class and the instrumentation is stunning. Grand Salvo has been a folk hero for many people around Melbourne for a number of years.

He has opened for other overseas contemporaries like Iron & Wine, Smog and Joanna Newsom and toured with locals Laura Jean and Darren Hanlon.

Review

Death is the story of a bird, a bear, a rat, a rabbit and a man, beautifully spun by Melbourne’s Grand Salvo. The album is magical, reminiscent of childhood stories narrated on cassette tapes; an indie folk version of Peter and the Wolf, with more foreboding, idiosyncrasy and whimsy.

Grand Salvo employs a combination of classical worn-in instruments, recordings of rain, spoken word, the harmonies of Zoe Randell and ‘various resonant objects’ to tell his story. In using a cast of picture-book characters to tell the familiar stories of love, fear and friendship, Grand Salvo proffers these emotions as though fresh from the forest.

Despite the melancholy album title, the music is often softly curious; darkness falls in time with the narrative, and Death eventually closes its final chapter on a dual note of sadness and hope.
