Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, Oleg Caetani Together with\nCasella, Malipiero and Respighi, Pizzetti was one of the leading\nItalian composers of the generation of Italian composers born\naround 1880 (the so-called generation of the 1880s) who, in\nreacting against the melodic excesses of their predecessors,\nPuccini and Mascagni, sought not only to modernize the Italian\nopera tradition but to re-establish non-operatic Italian music. On\nthis Naxos reissue of the first ever compact disc devoted\nexclusively to a selection of Pizzettis orchestral music, the\nintensely expressive yet self-contained Prelude to Act I of the\nopera, Fedra, is followed by the ripely romantic Piano Concerto\nCanti della stagione alta (Songs of the High Season). This disc\nalso includes the only recording of the colourful and dramatic\nSinfonia del fuoco, written for the 1914 silent film, Cabiria.
