Eric Whitacre follows the Grammy-winning success of his debut\nDecca album, Light and Gold (2743209), with Water Night, a brand\nnew album that features no less than seven World Premiere\nRecordings. Light and Gold was awarded ‘Best Choral Performance’ in\nFebruary 2012 at the 54th Grammy Awards for Whitacre’s first\nrecording as both composer and conductor. This second disc for\nDecca juxtaposes music written as a young composer alongside brand\nnew repertoire, both choral and orchestral, displaying the\ndifferent influences and styles of Whitacre.

\n

The Eric Whitacre Singers positively shimmer on these world\npremiere recordings of “Alleluia” and “Oculi Omnium”, two of the\nbrand new works alongside one of the greats of his oeuvre, “Her\nSacred Spirit Soars”. “Equus” is played by the full forces of the\nLondon Symphony Orchestra.

\n

By way of contrast, “The River Cam” is a beautiful, pastoral\npiece that demonstrates Nevada-born Whitacre’s absorption of the\nworks of Elgar and Vaughan Williams during his time in the UK as a\nvisiting Fellow at Cambridge University. It was written at the\ninvitation of the distinguished cellist, Julian Lloyd Webber, to\nmark his 60th birthday in 2011, who also gives the performance\nhere.

\n

An unexpected gem of the album is a setting of Goodnight Moon,\nthe multi-million selling American children’s book by Margaret Wise\nBrown (Harper Collins). Written for soprano and strings, this\ntender piece is performed by Hila Plitmann, a Grammy-winning artist\nwith great commitment to contemporary music.

\n

The title track, “Water Night”, is one of Eric Whitacre’s most\nperformed works, heard on this album performed by the strings of\nthe London Symphony Orchestra.

Review

If you haven’t heard of Eric Whitacre yet, that’s all going to change soon. Taking over the world one YouTube clip at a time, this new recording was produced using the internet through 73 different countries. My first thought at this was, ‘oh dear’. From the first glorious notes though you can see that they’ve used technology at the very height of sophistication. The works are all for solo choir, aside from the title track and ‘River Cam’ which includes solo cello. This is in the grand traditions of Gregorian Chant, John Rutter and every choral master you’ve ever heard. What a stunning album, do not miss it.
