Lay It Down

Green Al

In his highly-anticipated third Blue Note album of new material,\nR&B/soul legend Al Green delivers a new urban sound with Lay It\nDown, a fantastic collection of original songs carefully crafted by\nGreen and co-producers Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson (The Roots) and\nJames Poyser (Jill Scott, Mariah Carey, Erykah Badu). With\narrangements showcasing The Dap-Kings Horns and strings by Larry\nGold, all couched in Green’s rich and timeless vocals — highlighted\nby duet partners Corinne Bailey Rae, Anthony Hamilton, and John\nLegend — this album is truly classic with a modern twist,\nexpressing the best of the history and future of R&B/soul.

\n

This is Green’s best work in years and will cater to audiences\nyoung and old through the marriage of his retro sound and the\nhip-hop & pop/urban mainstream successes of the album’s\ncontributors.

Review

Al Green hugged me once, and I can still smell the Sta-Fro and hear his bottomless guffaw and feel the pat of his ringed fingers on my back. Then he was gone, back onto stage where he continued to smile his ear-to-eternity smile and tease us with his fake introductions – a juddering halt three bars into Let’s stay together while the Reverend asked us at length about our relationship with God, laughing at our frustration. When I hear him fold his arms on Tired of Being Alone or whisper on Simply Beautiful or catch the horn break on Loving You I am a goosepimpled neckhair-raised giggling fool of a man and I love it. When I hear Lay it Down, I can shrug and smile. My relationship with God may be shaky, but my relationship with Al Green is unsulliable.
