The Great House Hunt by Davide Cali & Marc Boutavant

Fans of the colourful Around the World with Mouk will be delighted to discover a new Boutavant book. Written by Davide Cali, the talented Italian author of the graphic novel 10 Little Insects, this is a funny, quirky story that pokes fun at our obsessions with housing and real estate agents.

A ladybug couple, Polka and Dot, realise their seed-pod house is too small for all their furniture. A friendly spider suggests they engage the services of a real estate agent, and the cocky, talkative weevil takes them on a tour of potential sites, making it up as he goes along. There’s plenty of humour (some of which will be over the heads of youngsters) and real estate speak:

‘This is not a hole,’ says Mr Weevil. ‘It’s an opening drawing fresh air in from outside.’

The pages are incredibly busy and the conversations can be difficult to follow, but the fun part is tracing the dotted line that follows the path of the unlikely trio through tunnels, forest, discarded snail shells, bottles and even a sandcastle.

Enormous fun for readers between 5 and 8.
