Mark Wigglesworth is one of those rare conductors who not only enjoys the respect of his fellow musicians but is also well renowned commentator on music. This is a rendition of the first three symphonies of Shostakovich, and they feel still optimistic and there’s a giant dash of cheekiness prevalent throughout the three works. Everything feels like it’s just beginning in his compositional life and it’s exciting to listen to history in the making.
