This new recording from Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic is the perfect introduction to these wonderful works by Rachmaninov. Beginning with The Isle of the Dead, a tone poem dating back to 1909, and inspired by the painting of the same name by Arnold Bochlin, Litton builds the tension beautifully and the result is haunting and powerful. Litton again delivers the goods on The Rock and Symphonic Dances. His passion for the music is obvious and all pieces benefit greatly. This is a must for all diehard fans of Rachmaninov, and for music lovers in general.
