L'Olimpiade

The Olympic fever is taking over again, however this time it’s even bled into the world of classical music. As much as some people would shudder at this thought, don’t! It has meant that we have this amazing recording. Between the early 1700s right through until the mid 1800s dozens of composers took the same libretto by Pietro Metastasio set in the world of the Olympiad and composed an opera based upon it. Cut to the 21st Century and we have a collection of die hard musicologists come together to perform one of these. Realising that so many of the operas have been left neglected with painstaking deliberation they created this ‘Pasticcio’. Tying together the original libretto, each aria is from a different opera by a different composer. There is some amazing music here from both known and forgotten composers. If you love opera, or even have a vague passing fancy to opera, this is a must for your collection.
