Dvorak Silent Woods

Poltera Christian Stott Kathryn

On this disc, Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott chart the\ngradual development in Dvořák’s composition for cello.

\n

The disc includes chamber works that Dvořák composed originally\nfor cello and piano or arranged for the combination including\nPolonaise in A major, the Rondo in G minor and Silent Woods which\nwas originally a piano duet.

\n

Poltéra also presents his own transcriptions of several violin\npieces and songs, including the Violin Sonatina, and Lasst mich\nallein, alongside the ever-popular Songs My Mother Taught Me and\nSong to the Moon from Rusalka.

\n

Christian Poltéra and Kathryn Stott are regular chamber music\npartners and have previously recorded music by Honegger and Frank\nMartin.

Review

I don’t know whether or not you’ve heard Dvorak’s works for cello and piano before, but I think that this sonority is almost unmatched by anything else. The spiralling upwards of the tunes and richness of vibrato and chords makes this choice of repertoire something to please everyone. Starting with the meaty Sonatina in G Major what follows are a series of enchanting miniatures that are perfect for a summer afternoon.
