Composed in 1723, The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi (1678 –\n1741) is not only his best-known composition, but a work that has\nbecome one of the most recognized and popular pieces of music ever\nwritten. The four concertos which comprise the composition follow\nthe seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter, and by turn offer\nsuperbly varied textures that take the listener from the festive,\nsprightly air of spring, to the heat and thunderstorms of summer,\nto the icy sleet of winter. There are literally hundreds of\nrecordings of this work, but this particular re-release with the\nTAFELMUSIK BAROQUE ORCHESTRA and JEANNE LAMON stands out as one of\nthe best. Although first released in 1992, one need only check some\nof the current on-line comments (amazon.com) to find there are\nstill passionate consumers declaring the performance as\n“enlightened,” “disciplined,” “elegant and dignified without being\nstuffy and stilted.” Or how about, “This is one of those done-\nto-death works that serious collectors must own.”
