\n

Following their recording of Striggio’s Mass in 40 Parts from\n1566, which racked up an astounding array of critical and\ncommercial plaudits, Robert Hollingworth leads his maverick\nensemble I Fagiolini on a new journey unearthing incredible lost\nworks from the late Renaissance and early Baroque: 1612. The\nrecording recreates a thanksgiving Vesper in commemoration of the\nfamous Venetian naval victory at Lepanto in 1571, celebrated for\nover 200 years after the event in a new festival – The Feast of the\nHoly Rosary.

The title 1612 represents a year of momentous events: the death\nof the master of the ‘Massive Baroque’ and most brilliant of\nVenetian multi-choir composers, Giovanni Gabrieli; and thereby the\napex of the fashion of multi-choirs. 1612 also marks the\npublication of Viadana’s collection of 4-choir Vesper Psalms, with\na layout considerably more forward-looking than Monteverdi’s psalms\nin his 1610 publication. 1612 presents the world premiere\nrecordings of Viadana’s Vesper Psalms and Gabrieli’s 28-voice\nMagnificat, surrounded by lost treasures from the glorious period\nof multi-choir music.

Review

At first look the depth of detail gone into the research and presentation of this recording feels like it should be for vocal enthusiasts only. However I found that, although the liner notes were extremely interesting, you didn’t need to understand how this recording came about to appreciate the beauty of each work. The title of recording comes from the death of Giovanni Gabrieli in 1612 and the publication in the same year of a little known set of Vespers by Lodovico Grossi da Viadana. Using scraps of knowledge and scores, Robert Hollingworth the I Fagiolini have recreated the Second Vespers of the feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, which is in commemoration f the Battle of Lepanto, 1571. There is nothing else quite like this recording.
