Cal Healy is an ex-soldier turned Private Investigator. When Healy's brother Ernie, a Director in the BC Ministry of Mines, is murdered in a home invasion, he is enraged but sets aside his anger to grieve with his family. And then, he resolves to find and punish the killers. RCMP Sergeant Tony Montgomery is Healy's best friend and conduit in the Vancouver Police Department investigation. Healy learns enough from Montgomery to convince him to do some checking. Healy gathers information from Ernie's workplace at the Department of Mines and his sources in Vancouver's Downtown East Side. His new intelligence aims his investigation at a pair of suspects that the police don't see as viable because his main informant is an alcoholic street person. To support his contention, Healy travels to Edmonton and gains further affirmation that he is on the right track. His investigation takes him to Tulameen, BC, where he discovers evidence of a modern-day claim-jumping operation that appears Province-wide. A murdered prospector and criminal behaviour in the gold claim registry office led Healy to mount a pair of attempts to trap the killers into mistakes. But Healy and one of his helpers who make mistakes put his friends and associates in danger. Remorseful and angry with himself, he continues a solo investigation. From now on, the risks are his alone. Not without reason, the fabulously wealthy entity Goldstone Enterprises keeps popping into Healy's search. He keeps pushing at the evil-doers. The results are dangerous. A professional killer is enlisted and directed to eliminate threats to the kingpin responsible for the evil goings-on. The evil includes the death of Healy's brother. Healy is unaware that his pressure places him in the crosshairs of the deadly hitman Alvin Lauder. Cal Healy is an ex-soldier turned Private Investigator.
