Personal. Training. Business.

Andrew Seymour

Finding success in the personal training field requires you to do so much more than have a certain certification, take a weekend course, or know how to workout. If only it were that easy. Sure, we program and create workouts for our people, but we have to address nutrition, stress, sleep, mental health, working through prior injuries or hesitations that people may have, and we do our best to provide a service that is all-inclusive with those offerings with reassuring smiles on our faces. Not every day is easy. Some days are long. Some days we're tired (thank God for coffee). Some days that 3:45 am alarm seems like it buzzed way too early. And yet, we get up, we provide the same high-quality service for our 5 am client as we would our 10 am or our 7:30 pm. It is our job to be 'on' and make each experience the best possible for our people. It is our job to be there for them in more ways than just giving them workouts and counting to twelve. When you sign up to be in the fitness world, these may be things that you're not ready for or that scare you into another field. It isn't for everyone. Not everyone lasts. I get it. If you want to make a career out of this amazing job, I hope you take the time to read this book. I do my best to relay and break down some areas that I believe will be useful for you to be the most successful at your job and provide the best service to those in your life. However, regardless of what is thrown your way, you can either let it take you down or you can figure out a way to solve the problem, learn from it, and be better because of it. Growth mindset is a real thing and by applying that to your life through your actions, it can be contagious and people love to be around someone who lifts others up. The text is split up into three pillars: Personal, Training, and Business. When discussing ways to continue growing our business name, reputation, and brand, I thought it would be a good idea to share my areas of expertise and to help others in similar positions. We do that every day as we try to help our personal training and strength and conditioning clients, but if we can help other peers in our field, more people looking to better themselves through the world of health and fitness can be positively impacted. The first and most important portion of a personal trainer should be the relationship and the connection with others. If you create connections and take care of your people, good things will happen. It is fine to be money motivated but if that's the only motivation, you will be exposed quickly. Secondly, people come to you for a service. Training clients is no easy task. Progressing individuals out of their comfort zones; providing honest feedback when changes are not immediately seen; and identifying each individual's goals and limitations are all factors we must take into account when preparing to train each day. Lastly, it is a business. I give some insight into what has helped us build a successful small business (before, during, and after a global pandemic) and how to continue to grow your name, brand, and product so you can flip this job into a career. All three pillars play a crucial role in creating and sustaining a successful personal training business. It is important that you address all three areas. In doing so, you not only uphold your recognition as being a well-educated and intelligent coach, but you become known for treating people with respect and maintaining a reputable business. Check all three boxes and you will notice similar success.
