Los personajes de los cuentos de El naranjo arriesgan la vida y sufren injusticias sin llegar a satisfacer sus ambiciones: un marinero portugues que lanza una botella al mar, un soldado espanol que vive entre indios y sirve de interprete a Cortes, un noble griego que pone sitio a Numancia, un hijo de Cortes implicado en una conspiracion contra el rey y un actor de Hollywood que visita un prostibulo en Acapulco. El autor muestra las miserias de la conquista de America, los horrores de las guerras en Europa y los exotismos del mundo contemporaneo a traves de la fi gura emblematica del naranjo, simbolo del mestizaje.

Through the figure of the orange tree, emblematic symbol of the mestizaje, Fuentes creates a world of short stories that describe the miseries of the Spanish conquest of America, the horrors of the European wars and the exoticisms of the contemporary world. Its characters risk their lives, suffer injustices and live a life of unfulfilled ambitions - a Portuguese sailor throws a bottle to the sea, a Spanish soldier who lives amongst Indians acts as Cortes’ interpreter, Cortes’ son is implicated in a conspiracy against the king, a Hollywood actor visits an Acapulco brothel.
