Si no reconocemos nuestra humanidad en los demas, nunca la reconoceremos en nosotros mismos. De los espejos de obsidiana enterrados en la urbe totonaca de El Tajin a los espejos ibericos de Cervantes y Velazquez, el de la locura y el del asombro, un intercambio de reflejos culturales ha ido y venido de una a otra orilla del Atlantico a lo largo de mas de quince anos; este ensayo cuenta esa historia, la nuestra.

Solo nos vemos enteros en el espejo desenterrado de la identidad cuando aparecemos acompanados del otro; entonces somos por fin capaces de mirar de cerca las consecuencias de nuestras acciones y convertir la experiencia en conocimiento.

Cultures fossilize if they are isolated, but they are born or reborn upon contact with other men and women: men and women of another culture, another creed, another race.

If we don’t recognize our humanity in others, we will never recognize it in ourselves. From the obsidian mirrors buried in the Totonac city of El Tajin to the Iberian mirrors of Cervantes and Velazquez; that of insanity and that of amazement; an exchange of cultural reflections has come and gone from one shore of the Atlantic to the other throughout more than fifteen years. This essay tells the story.

We only see ourselves completely in the unearthed mirror of identity when we appear alongside another; then we are finally capable of examining the consequences of our actions and converting the experience into knowledge.
