Fur die Erzahlung, die in Nordafrika spielt, verwendete May Motive der fruheren Novellen Die Gum und Die Rosa von Sokna . Erstmals im Werk von Karl May taucht in der Reiseerzahlung Unter Wurgern der Name Old Shatterhand auf. Der Ich-Erzahler berichtet, dass ihm dieser Name wegen seines kraftigen Fausthiebs im Wilden Westen verliehen worden sei.
