Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark is perhaps the most frequently translated and parodied English language poems into Russian. It is quite possible that no other country has managed to inspire so many translators to have a go at the difficult translation. Somehow, Lewis Carroll’s poem has spoken to the Russian soul. The first person to produce a full Russian translation of the Snark is Victor Fet, who managed this feat in 1975. Not only a translator, Fet is also a Russian poet himself, a biology professor, a world-class expert on scorpions, and a particularly effective literary sleuth. He has located and described, with analysis both trenchant and humorous, no fewer than 36 different published full translations in Russian, by 33 translators (1991-2015), plus many partial translations-even down to single-stanza and single-line quotes. In this book is the final (1981) version of Fet’s Russian translation of Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark as well as
facsimile of its 1976 version (a Samizdat typescript), a detailed Foreword, and additional materials including a comprehensive annotated bibliography in English. There is no doubt that it will stand as the foundation for Russian Snarkology. -Byron W. Sewell —–
