Starting with an early settlement dating from about 1600 years ago Jakarta has grown to become a densely populated city and the capital of Indonesia. Jakarta has always been a centre for trade. The old capital Batavia was the main port city for the Dutch East India Company and was known around the world as a source of wealth through commerce.
