Comparrotives

Janik Coat

In this oversize board book, young readers will learn about comparative adjectives via a very humorous parrot-from noisy and noisier, to messy and messier, to happy and happier when it finally finds a friend.

As with the previous books in the series, Comparrotives features surprising touch-and-feel novelty elements throughout-making the comparatives concept easy and fun to learn.

Review

French author Janik Coat’s brilliant board books aimed at introducing simple grammar concepts have been a favourite in our household ever since my now two year old first got his sticky mitts on a copy of Rhymoceros. The newest book in the series – Comparrotives – is a welcome addition that teaches children the adjectives used to compare one noun to another: noisy and noisier; soft and softer; and so on.

The brightly coloured illustrations pair with simple text to create a witty and unexpected reading experience that will make children (and adults) giggle, and the larger size format is perfect for grabbing and holding the attention of very young children. As with Coat’s other books, there’s a textural element to some of the pages that stands up to the most enthusiastic fondling. I love Comparrotives for its style and humour, and my son loves it because he can shout ‘bouncier!’ and ‘faster!’ while we read. Perfect for ages 1+.
