First published in 1988, this is a collection of articles exploring the meaning of masculinity, work, at home, in politics and in love. Looking at fashion, images of black men, heterosexuality, feminism, the new man and families, it examines some of the growing uncertainties about what it means to be male today. A feature of all the contributors is that they refer, as a constant touch-stone, to popular culture: in film, television, fiction and daily life. This book sets out to unwrap the myths that have surrounded masculinity and men’s power, and argues that an in-depth understanding of masculinity is needed if sense is to be made of politics and change in the 1990s. The contributors include Isaac Julien; Kobena Mercer, Suzanne Moore, Frank Mort and Lynne Segal.
