Night Writing

Kathryn Lomer

A vivid new collection of poetry from the winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award - Kenneth Slessor poetry prize.

Night Writing is a collection infused with grace and lightness. The poems are influenced by Kathryn Lomer’s considerable skills as a storyteller and convey sensuality, fresh imagery and tension between the grounded and the whimsical.

The volume is divided into five interconnecting sections ‘The love hand’, ‘Rainbow angle’, ‘The heart is in the room’, ‘The Fencer and his mate’ and ‘Night writing’. The collection begins with a poem about the courage to love and centres on the observation ‘I once read that love is mainly courage’.

The collection is inspired by landscape (including some beautiful evocations of the Tasmanian wilderness), craft and creativity, motherhood and resilience. Night Writing is an invigorating new volume that is a welcome addition to Kathryn Lomer’s award-winning previous poetry collections, Two Kinds of Silence (UQP, 2007) and Extraction of Arrows (UQP, 2003).
