Thirty-seven-year-old Jillian Moore is about to give birth to her second child. But while in labor, her doctor neglects her for unknown reasons which results in the birth of a profoundly brain damaged girl she names Hannah. As Jillian learns to cope with her sick child, she struggles with growing resentment toward her husband, Nathan, anger toward the doctor, and a fractured relationship with her teenaged daughter, Caroline.

Caroline, meanwhile, goes head first into puberty feeling lonely and confused about her changing life and her new position as the oldest child.
