Future Universe

Peno Ron & The Superstitions

A milestone release in the annals of Australian rock, Future Universe is debut solo album from the man who is one of most charismatic and acclaimed front men of the past 30 years. Ron Peno is also a songwriter of distinction - he cowrote all of Died Pretty’s classic material - and the possessor of a voice that is as instantly recognisable as it is beautiful and soul-baring. A familiar face on Sydney’s inner city scene from the early ‘80s through to Died Pretty’s split early in the new century, Ron has made Melbourne his home for the best part of the last decade. Whilst undertaking a couple of Died Pretty reunions (including for the Big Day Out nationally in 2009), Ron recently formed a solid partnership with ex-Silver Ray guitarist Cam Butler and the Superstitions were born. Ron reckons Future Universe is his best work since Died Pretty’s definitive Doughboy Hollow’s album. A wonderful set of Peno/Butler songs and an accomplished, richly detailed recording, the album sits well with the work of other Australian masters like Nick Cave and Ed Kuepper, and decidedly puts Ron in the same pantheon.

Review

Future Universe is the debut solo effort from former singer/songwriter with Sydney heroes Died Pretty (and all-round local music legend) Ron Peno. Peno has called Melbourne home for some time and after forming a partnership with ex-Sliver Ray guitarist Cam Butler, The Superstitions were born. Possessed of one of the most uniquely brooding, soul-baring and recognisable voices in Australian music, Peno & Co. have delivered a fabulous record. Indeed, Peno himself reckons Future Universe to be his best work since Died Pretty’s definitive Doughboy Hollow – and after a couple of listens, it’s hard to argue otherwise.
