Roussel Symphony No 2 Pour Une Fete De Printemps Suite In F Major

Deneve Stephane Rsno

Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice, July 2008

Roussel:
Symphony No. 2, Op. 23
Pour une fête de printemps (1921)
Suite in F Op. 33

Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Stephane Deneve (conductor) Albert Roussel has never had the appreciation or popularity that, say, Debussy or Ravel had. He has always been an outsider in French music. The music on this disc includes his Second Symphony with its densely intricate orchestration and its wide range of expression. The suite in F Major has very contemporary feel in the vein of Stravinsky or Prokofiev, while Pour une fete de printemps is a symphonic poem that could be thought of as preparation for the larger work. Beautifully performed by the RSNO and Stephane Deneve. Hopefully with this new release from Naxos there will a lot more converts to the music of Roussel.
