Most people outside of conservatoriums don’t hear any sort of woodwind quartet regularly, but recently a number of high quality saxophone quartet recordings have been released. Breathing Lessons is the next one that, for any discerning listener of contemporary repertoire, is a must. With a dynamic contrast that is enviable and a musical integrity to rival any string quartet, the New Hudson Saxophone Quartet are simply really good. At times mellow and jazz-inflected, with contrasting moments that are more classical in tone, this ensemble is a lot of fun to listen to.
